APN Data Service Configuration

5 min readMobile

In some cases where a user's devices are unable to set up the network interface automatically to operate on Atomic Mobile (Telstra Premium Mobile network, aka WME), a manual configuration to access WPD (Wireless Pack Data) may be required. Below are steps and parameters to set up , and devices.

Ensure the device is:

- Not locked with any other carrier or service;

- Up to date with the latest Operational System available;

- Wi-Fi is turned off;

- The device is operational and working properly.

Android

The configuration screen for Android devices is usually located in the Applications/settings/Mobile Network/Access point name’s submenu , end users need to input the following settings to configure the device:

Table (Header Column)
APNmdata.net.au
Proxy
Port
Username
Password
Server
MMSChttp://mmsc.mdata.net.au:8003
MMS Proxy10.1.1.180
MMS Port80
MMS ProtocolWAP 2.0
MCC505
MNC01
Authentication
APN Typedefault,dun,supl,mms

To activate device tethering on capable devices (enabling a handset to be used as a modem), please use the vendor’s PC Sync software and specify the APN mdata.net.au as part of the software’s configuration screen (if required).

Windows

Devices using the Windows phone operating system require manual configuration to access WPD.The end user may be required to perform multiple steps to get this working – the example for a WinPhone 7.5 device is given below. You and your end user should refer to the handset manual in each case.

The end user needs to follow the following steps:

1. From the front screen, go to the /settings/mobile network/’edit apn’ button

2. Under APN field, enter: mdata.net.au

3. Once the previous two steps are complete, the end user should be able to browse the internet.

4. Set up the device (as per the user manual), including creating a new or applying an existing ‘windows live’ account by following the steps as prompted by the handset.

5. Check their SMS settings via the /messaging/settings screen. If the SMSC number is not present, the end user must enter it manually (+61 418 706 275). Refer to device manual.

6. Download the Network Setup app from the Microsoft Marketplace (this app may be called a Connection Setup, Network Profile or other name depending on the brand of the handset). Click on the Marketplace icon, search for the Network Setup app (or the relevantly named app) and download it.

7. Once downloaded, execute the application. The app will perform a search and come up with the setting for Telstra

8. Hit the + symbol to add a new APN setting

9. A table will appear. Fill out the connection name field with any desired name (one that can be easily identified – refer to device manual for any limitations on length of name).

10. Select the tickbox make this my current APN

11. For both the Internet and MMS APN’s, fill out the data as in the table below (items marked (blank) do not need to be filled in)

12. Turn the phone off, then turn it back on again for the settings to take effect

13. Try to send a test MMS to make sure this functionality is working (there are limits to the data size of an MMS on the Telstra Wholesale Mobile Services network and on some handsets).

The following table contains the required Telstra network data settings for a typical WinPhone smart phone for Internet APN / Data Browsing:

Apple

It is possible to configure a generic Apple device to operate on the Telstra mobile network with most major functionality supported.

1. The end user must contact the carrier whose network their Apple device is currently operating on and request that the device be ‘unlocked’. Depending on the carrier and network involved, there may be a fee for this. The end user must do this even if they are a customer of a Telstra retail business unit.

2. Insert the new USIM into the device.

3. The end user must then activate their device by either connecting it to a computer (via a USB cable) or to a wireless internet connection and running the Apple ‘iTunes’ utility (available from http://www.apple.com/itunes/).

4. In the setup screen, please complete the items requested (eg phone name, sync settings) and then select ‘Done’.

5. Wait for the sync to complete - once done, the device should be capable of making calls, sending and receiving SMS messages.

6. Some devices may allow the manual configuration of internet browsing via the device menus. To check if this is possible, access the following menu: /settings /general /network or mobile data (scroll down) /cellular or mobile data network.

If the menu allows the population of internet browsing and Internet tethering (enabling a handset to be used as a modem), manually enter the data from the table below:

Table (Header Column)
APNmdata.net.au
Proxy
Port
Username
Password
Server
MCC505
MNC01
Authentication
APN Typedefault,dun,supl

If the device allows the manual population of the data, once this is done the end user has finished the procedure.

1. If the device does not allow configuration of Internet browsing as set out above, internet browsing can still be configured on the device using the Apple Configuration Tool software, which needs to be downloaded to a computer from Apple’s website. Follow the instructions on the Apple website to create the new configuration file.

2. Typical configuration profile named ‘mdata.net.au’ are given below. The most critical field is the ‘Access Point Name’ field in the second (APN) screen. Ensure the username, password and proxy fields remain blank.
